My first RPG experience was a couple years ago back on the Gameboy Color. I guess that actually makes it more than a couple of years (1999), huh? The game was Revelations: The Demon Slayer. I hadn't played any real RPGs before that and I was completely unprepared for what I would find. To put it simply, I was hooked. I must have put dozens of hours into learning everything I could about that game.
For those who haven't had the privilege of playing Revelations, it is similar to most old school turn-based RPGs with the addition of monster recruitment. That ability is a hallmark of the Shin Megami Tensei games, which Revelations is a spin-off from. In Revelations case, it is quite a cool little addition. Pretty much any monster you face, bosses included, has the potential to become one of your party members afterward. Unlike Pokemon though, these recruited monsters don't gain any experience or new attacks as they are used in combat. That was somewhat of a bummer, but not too bad. It was just neat to get to whoop random enemies with the last boss you spent all that effort defeating! Ah yes, those were the days.
I don't really remember anything about the storyline, so that likely means it wasn't too memorable. But the gameplay alone was enough to propel me through the entirety of the experience. It did borrow at least one aspect from final fantasy in the form of an airship you acquired through your travels. That boat was quite a time saver in getting from place to place. The only other thing that really sticks out to me was the tendency of naming characters from Biblical sources. You had Lucifer, Baal, and I'm fairly certain some name for God; maybe Yahweh or Jehovah. It's been a while since I played it.
While I have of course played much better RPGs in the decade since stumbling upon Revelations, it will always have a special place in my heart as my first RPG. I am sure everyone has similar stories about their first time too.
