I have lofty expectations for 2009. This first quarter is more jam packed than anything I've seen in the past few years. At the same time, there's not a flood of content for the rest of the year that's been announced yet. Japan still has a hold on a lot of what I'm looking forward to, so I might have to keep my expectations in check. Localization has gotten a lot better though, so we're getting stuff over here in North America that we'd have never expected to see just a few short years ago.
I want to see North America get more games this year than ever. We need Sega to not only release Sands of Destruction and two Phantasy Star titles, but we need to see 7th Dragon and Shining Force Feather as well. Atlus needs to rush us a localization of Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner 2 and NIS America needs to crank out Sakura Wars ~So Long, My Love~ before the PlayStation 2 dries up completely. Atlus can fire us Devil Survivor while they are at it, I won't mind, I promise. Namco Bandai needs to let us have a decent portable Tales game. Come on, Radiant Mythology just doesn't cut it, especially with some good ones available to bring over. Finally, Square Enix needs to step up with an NA release of Dragon Quest IX this year and also to shock the world by releasing Final Fantasy XIII here in 2009 despite the statement Wada just made. Yes, that's not realistic on the second part of that wish, but a man can dream, can't he?
But I'm a man that's not just happy with what's known; I like to dream. I want to see new games and revivals of old ones. First and foremost, I want to see EGM's rumor of a PSP Persona game come true in the form of a game in the same style as Persona 3 & 4. The PSP can do it, I know they can. I want Mistwalker to succeed by fulfilling Sakaguchi's desire not to be "embarrassed" with his next major console offering. Lost Odyssey II please? I'm not that crazy, am I? Companies are already fulfilling some of my prior desires, such as Nintendo tossing a Fire Emblem game onto the DS and Square Enix making a multiplayer Crystal Chronicles game that doesn't require people to be in the same room to play.
To end this rambling of a mad man, I just want to say that my hopes for 2009 are high, and rightfully so. There is a lot that this year can offer and I believe that it can deliver. If someone was to ask me if I thought that all of these would come to pass, I'd laugh and admit that I don't truly think so. However, if we do happen to see Final Fantasy XIII actually hit North America in 2009, you can thank me for it. I'm closing my eyes and wishing extra hard just for you.
