STAFF EDITORIALIST

I've always had a thing for classicism. I am in no way an expert, or even a buff on the subject, but a story, film, or game built around an ancient culture is always going to have automatic bonus points in my book. It's one of the reasons I love God of War so much and why I look to Rise of the Argonauts with high hopes.

There is just something about it, the vibe of long gone cultures and religions that I think works so well with video games. They are not just some story full of stock characters made up to sell a game, they are things that real people actually believed in once, and the complexity of real world belief is something that is hard to emulate. I can only hope that games like Rise of the Argonauts help to inspire more role playing games grounded in the various worlds of classicism. The wealth of material already out their that would translate well into RPG format is rather vast."

Imagine for instance, games based around the works of Homer. Virgil's Aenid would make a great game, and I can only imagine the kinds of possibilities there could be if someone were to turn Dante's Infernor into an RPG. Anyone fancy a trip through hell?

For the most part RPGs center on similar worlds of tried and true fantasy, and that's fine to an extent. But with all the culture, and stories out there, why let them rest unused? We need more games like Rise of the Argonauts. We need more Valkyrie Profiles. Where are the games the inspired Egypt or the Aztecs? Gladius is not going to satiate my hunger for worlds along the style of Rome. Our own world and history can serve as a grand inspiration for gaming, it's a shame fewer people recognize that.
