Square Enix Never Makes Anything New

Square Enix never makes anything new. Everything they put out is a remake. They constantly recycle old games, because they can't make anything new. Man, why don't they just focus on new stuff instead of these constant remakes?

Heard that before? I have, and I'm sick of it. Does Square Enix have a large amount of remakes in the works? Yes. Is that all they do? No. Take a look at the following list of upcoming titles:

  • Final Fantasy XIII (PS3)
  • Final Fantasy Versus XIII (PS3)
  • Final Fantasy Tactics A2: Grimoire of the Rift (DS)
  • Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo's Dungeon (Wii)
  • Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a King (Wii Ware)
  • Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Crystal Bearers (Wii)
  • The World Ends With You (DS)
  • The Last Remnant (Xbox 360/PS3)
  • Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep (PSP)
  • Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 Days (DS)
  • Dragon Quest IX (DS)

All of those RPGs are just a small sampling of what is known at this point. That's not even including tri-Ace developed titles like Infinite Undiscovery. Things have come a long way since the days of developing one RPG a year. Square Enix doesn't just have a single development team forcing them to only work on one game at a time. Yes, they have some higher profile development teams due to their focus on bigger name titles, i.e. Final Fantasy XIII. This is just to be expected, as the numbered series is the flagship series for the company. With the high development costs/times it takes to develop a game in the numbered series, it's much easier to have some of the smaller teams work on smaller projects. They can't put all their eggs into the Final Fantasy XIII basket. Sometimes these projects are new, unique IPs like The World Ends with You, and other times it is remakes of classic titles like Dragon Quest IV for the DS. Within the past year or so since the last main series game, we've had plenty of other new projects for better or worse. We've had Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Ring of Fates, Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings, Dragon Quest Monsters - Joker, Heroes of Mana, Dragon Quest Swords, and Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII.

That being said, I've come to the conclusion that most of the people that complain about Square Enix remakes and them "not making anything new" are only interested in the main series games. Everything else that Square Enix puts out is meaningless to them, so are new IPs wasted? Is it a lack of console projects that is problematic? If that's the case, I guess we will see how well The Last Remnant and Infinite Undiscovery do. I'm banking on a lot more complaining though. People love to complain. After all, look at me, I'm complaining about you.
