I'll admit, I'm a bit slow getting into the new generation of consoles. The only new gen console I own is the Wii, and there's not a whole lot in terms of RPGs to play on it yet. I still love my PS2 and have a huge backlog of games that I own but have yet to play. I'd like a 360 and PS3, but haven't had the gumption to pick up either. The more I see all the exciting new titles that are planned for this new gen, the more I look back on my old favorites and wonder if there will be a place for them past the PS2, or (if they're lucky), a handheld installment of some kind.
First off, I feel the need to ask Level 5 a question: What happened to Dark Cloud 3? I mean, I know that the series isn't one of the bigger blockbusters, but I liked it, and was extremely pleased with the last game. I feel like I must have missed a news bulletin or something, because last I heard, they were planning to make it, and then it's like it was completely forgotten. I think Dark Cloud could do well as a new current gen game. With the power of the 360 or the PS3, they could take the town building/creation aspect to a whole new level. I hope it's not dead.
And Shadow Hearts, my favorite dark, history-bending RPG series? It's not over yet, is it? I don't care if it's still on the PS2 or a next gen system. It might be fun to screw around with the Cold War timeline, with CIA spies and crafty communists. Come on! There's a lot of really interesting history there. Stalin, the Company, the HUAC, the fall of the Berlin Wall, fear of nuclear war. And that's just to name a few. Think of the zany playable characters we could get out of it.
I also really want a new installment to Baten Kaitos. It's not fair to make the last game so good and pull me back into the series, and then turn around and never make another one. I have no idea how to implement this game with the Wii's motion controls, though. It really doesn't need it. But I hope, hope, hope, that I'll someday hear something about a new Baten Kaitos game in development. And don't forget Suikoden. Not immensely popular, but it had a decent following. I haven't heard anything about something new from Suikoden since the last installment came out. Are all these series going to be forgotten in favor of serializing one of the fresh, next gen RPGs?
There's some series that everyone knows will not be dying out anytime soon on new gen consoles. Final Fantasy is going to be around FOREVER, and the Tales of series is getting new re-releases on not one, but two new consoles. And I'm happy to see the birth of potential new series like Eternal Sonata, White Knight, and Last Remnant. But I'm a nostalgic kind of gamer. I guess while I think games like Lost Odyssey are a good step forward, I don't want it to completely squash the games like Wild Arms and what not.
