THE TYPES OF RPG HEROES
The Young Buck
Traits: Impulsive for a fight, dense, thinks girls have cooties and occasionally insensitive. Basically acts like a ten-year-old trapped in the body of a teenager/adult
Outfit: Something bright
Role: Usually the hero in G and sometimes T-rated games
Examples: Adell (Disgaea 2), Llyod (Tales of Symphonia)
Notes: Can give Ash Ketchem a run for his money in every bad trait he has
Crab-Ass
Traits: Angsty, rude, has a "twagic past" that usually isn't that bad, whines and sulks constantly (especially if he's a teen) so everyone around him (including the player) knows how bad he's got it
Outfit: Usually dark
Role: Usually the hero in T and M-rated games
Examples: Squall (Final Fantasy VIII), Kalos (Baten Kaitos)
Notes: It doesn't matter if there's someone else on the team whose got it worse/just as bad and takes it with more dignity and maturity, this guy's the real victim here, damn it
The Older Guy
Traits: Quiet, brooding, can hold his liquor, has a mysterious past
Outfit: Actually looks like a man
Role: Supporting character, acts as a mentor/father figure to the rest of the team
Examples: Auron (Final Fantasy X)
Notes: These days being an older character in a Japanese RPG means you're at least 25
Animal Brute
Traits: Slow-talking, animalistic, primitive
Outfit: Usually goes shirtless (or at least wears a vest) to prove how savage he is
Role: Supporting character. Use to be fairly popular about five to ten years ago
Examples: Rico (Xenogears), Kimahri (Final Fantasy X)
Horndog Cassanova
Traits: Egotistical, flirts with almost anything remotely female, air headed
Outfit: Sometimes western-themed or kind of flamboyant
Role: Supporting character
Examples: Zelos (Tales of Symphonia), Irvine (Final Fantasy VIII)
Notes: Thinks girls who haven't had their periods yet are still fair game
Silent Guy
Traits: Despite the fact that he's just a bunch of walking stats, everyone likes him and will happily give their life up for him
Outfit: No real stereotype
Role: Main character
Examples: Serph (Digital Devil Saga), any main hero from the Breath of Fire series
Note: Despite the fact that the developers say that they want you to fill in what the hero should say in your mind, a lot of times what YOU want to say would be pretty damn rude
The Big Gay Stereotype
Traits: Think of every flamboyant gay you ever seen and shove them into this guy
Outfit: Whatever they can steal from Ru-Paul's closet
Role: Supporting character, starting to gain more popularity
Examples: The store vendors from the Shadow Hearts series, Makoto (Enchanted Arms)
Notes: Has the power to make yaoi fans crave lesbo porn
THE TYPES OF RPG HEROINES
Sandra Dee
Traits: Pure, goodie-goodie, almost never displays a negative trait, doormat
Outfit: Usually at least 40% of it is white. In the rare cases it's not, it must be flimsy enough to show her panties as much as possible
Role: Is usually the main hero's potential girlfriend (especially if the hero is the Crab-Ass)
Examples: Collette (Tales of Symphonia), Alice (Shadow Hearts)
Notes: Thinks Edith Bunker was too strong-willed
The Wittle Girl
Traits: Has the mentality of someone ten years younger than she actually is, overly cheerful, can be rather selfish
Outfit: Usually yellow, skimpy, with accessories no ten-year-old would be caught dead wearing
Role: Supporting character
Examples: Selphie (Final Fantasy VIII), Norma (Tales of Legendia)
Notes: Thinks "big meanie" is a decent insult despite the fact that she's over the age of 8
Rhymes with Witch
Traits: Loud, rude, selfish, and snobby. Basically it's her world and everyone else is a stupid peon that's supposed to kiss her butt
Outfit: Purple seems to be a popular color
Role: Either main heroine or supporting character. This one is starting to gain popularity
Examples: Lita (Atelier Iris), Lilly (Suikoden III)
Note: It was bad enough when they were in animes, couldn't they just keep them there?
Ice Queen
Traits: Usually older, cold, keeps her emotions walled up
Outfits: Usually dark or muted colors
Role: Supporting character, may have crush on hero but will never have him
Examples: Lulu (Final Fantasy X), Quistis (Final Fantasy VIII)
Notes: Arguably, the least annoying of the female stereotypes
Tough Lady
Traits: She's uh, tough and not much else. (Kinda like the Ice Queen, but slightly less uptight and likes to fight.) Starting to gain popularity
Outfit: Skimpy enough to make people wonder if she's a stripper
Role: Supporting character
Examples: Lilika (Rogue Galaxy), Fran (Final Fantasy XII)
The Poor Little Victim
Traits: Usually shares some traits with the Sandra Dee, but with a LOT more self-pity, is physically weak, and a selfish streak a mile long. Has some evil empire or something who wants some kind of power or royal title she has
Outfit: Similar to Sandra Dee's, but a little more conservative
Role: Supporting character character, has a strong connection to the hero
Examples: Katchua (Tactics Ogre), Shirley (Tales of Legendia)
Notes: Will dump her friends for the bad guy if the hero "betrays" her or won't kiss up to her
Love-Struck Loser
Traits: The man of her dreams (who she never had the guts to ask out) is her only reason for existence and the fact that he won't give her the time of day no matter how much she flirts with him (often to the point of being obnoxious) enters her every thought and conversation. When she's not angsting, the rest of her time is spent trying to prove herself to her crush.
Outfit: No real stereotype
Role: Supporting character, has a connection with the hero
Examples: Shana (Legend of Dragoon), Paula (Arc The Lad: Spirits of the Twilight)
Notes: There's a very good chance her crush might play for the other team if you know what I mean
And don't forget to give your female one of these "unique" traits they give almost every heroine...
-Likes cute things
-Greedy (especially if she's The Wittle Girl)
-Puts her hand to her chest a lot (popular for Sandra-Dees)
-Eats more than a morbidly obese shut-in
-So sheltered she doesn't know what a dagger or romantic love is
-Couldn't make a Tang sandwich without burning down the kitchen (I.E. She's a horrid cook)
-Extreme clumsiness that is played for laughs
-Can hold her own and has a cool personality (Wait, how did that one get in there?)
