Well, I'm officially starting to run out of semi-clever sounding titles for my editorials. Anyhow, you may all remember Macstorm's editorial back in October about wanting more RPGs on the Wii. I heartily agree with this. And, on the vein of my last editorial, I thought it might be interesting to delve a bit farther into what new games from beloved franchises would be great to play on the Wii. So far, we've gotten our Zelda and Fire Emblem. And we know that Harvest Moon, Tales of, Dragon Quest, and a few Final Fantasys are on the horizon. I have several franchises in mind that I'd like to see new Wii installments for.
The Boktai series doesn't tend to get a lot a attention over here, but newest installment of sorts, Lunar Knights for the DS, garnered up some favorable attention from gamers. And vampire/demon hunting is always a fun activity to partake in. Maybe a nice shiny Wii incarntion of some kind can attract some more fans to Kojima's lesser known series.
There's hasn't been much word about the Golden Sun series since its two games on the Game Boy Advance. I was never given the opportunity to play it, but most people I spoke to about it seemed to like the games. Although, with some tweaks, the traditional RPG plots and themes might seem a bit stale to players now. But who knows? It might a worth a shot to bring back the franchise.
The Mother series, while unknown to me, is one most infamous RPG series among RPG gamers. Afterall, the games have to be pretty good to have characters featured in all three Super Smash Brother games. I think the Japanese companies involved with these games would do well to give American gamers one of two things; either a new game in the series, or a remake of one of the games. Or at least release them on the Virtual Console. Please?
So far, any kind of Pokemon title that comes out on a major console ends up either being an glorified way to see the Pokemon from your handheld game with better graphics, or some shallow title that only ten year olds would be interested in. The true, handheld Pokemon RPGs have always been great. Collecting little fighting creatures is fun for just about anyone. We can trade and fight with other players with our handhelds versions. Well, the Wii's getting online capabilities with Smash Brothers. Maybe it's time to finally bring out the really good Pokemon RPGs to the currnt major console. Think how much it would do for the games. Let's not lie, most of us actually liked seeing our 2D creatures in 3D using Pokemon Stadium and Colosseum. Why not just give us the full experience already? (and Gale of Darkness doesn't count.)
I should also mention that the second Baten Kaitos game on the Gamecube restored my love of the series. I would love to see a new installment for the series on the Wii. Anyhow, I'm probably stretching a little on some of these. But these are good starts, I think. The Wii could be capable of making some great RPGs. They just have to be made. Besides the fact that we really need more RPGs on the Wii, period. And I mean good ones.
