With all of the successful RPG series that continue to release games, it's easy to forget about the one hit wonder RPGs. As I start to see more single RPGs slowly start to branch into their own series, such as Dark Cloud, Shadow Hearts, and Valkyrie Profile, I start to think of all the games I've played that could have some good sequels and/or subsequent games.
The first game that immediately comes to mind is Skies of Arcadia. A good game in it's own right, it set the basis to expand the Arcadia world into an excellent series. Air pirates, earning your own crew, treasure hunting, skyship battles; I'd love to do all this in a brand new adventure. Not to mention the side quest of hunting down bounties. This is a series that I definitely want to happen.
An oddity of game that I haven't gotten around to playing again, Okage: Shadow King for the PS2 featured a rather cute little story and character design, but the execution was a bit lackluster. If a potential sequel was made that retooled and fixed up the flaws of the first game, we could have a fun little RPG that with a quirky art direction that is refreshingly different from the norm.
I would love to see something new come out of the amazing game Okami. I can't exactly figure out how this will happen as the studio that made the game, Clover, went under. But I'd hate to see the incredible art style and gameplay that was presented in Okami die out. Using calligraphy to manipulate the laws of nature and time rocks!
Gurumin for the PSP and Vagrant Story would also make good candidates for new stories. That's just to name a few, but I have reasonable hope that some of these speculations could come true. I never would have imagined Dark Cloud to get a second game, and we'll soon be getting the third game in the franchise. And these are just the ones I know of. I'd be interested to know what other one hit wonders could be turned into the next successful RPG series.
