You Are Not a Movie Star

More and more, it seems as if RPG characters are being marketed like movie stars. In the case of characters like Cloud and Vincent, I guess they are movie stars. I find that sad for them, because of what they are forced to do. Yes, as movie stars they must wear the same costume all the time. Never can they venture out sporting awesome new armor or even the latest Midgar fashions, as they seem to be contractually tied to always have the same thing on. Those outfits surely must start to tear or smell after a few years.

On a more serious note, I hate that the majority of RPGs have so much tied into one specific character art design that they can't allow us to see the character ever look differently, especially when equipping new armor. Most RPGs show changes of weapons these days, but very few show the swapping of armor. Armor never changes for any situation. Going off to battle in the frozen tundra? Keep sporting that tank top. Getting ready for sword combat? Forget a shield; just make sure you have your pretty bracelet on. Venturing throughout the Wild West? Don't forget your daisy dukes. Is there so much invested in character recognition that different armor would be that much of a problem?

Not everyone is afraid of this, but it seems like the RPG has to feature a silent protagonist or a user-created character in order for armor changes to be viewable. One of the best parts of Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology and games like it would have to be the character creation and unique armor changes that are possible. But why the limitation? This isn't one of the tired RPG clichés that can't be fixed. It can change, but the idea that RPG characters are movie stars needs to change for that to happen.
