Playing Nice with Others: My Anti-Socialism in MMORPGs

STAFF EDITORIALIST

I have just recently caught the MMORPG bug going around. Of course, as I am cheap, I wasn't willing to buy a game that I was going to have to pay a monthly fee for (Sorry World of Warcraft, that means you). But I got interested in all these free MMORPGs I'd been seeing ads for, so I figured what the hey. I took the plunge and downloaded one. Flash forward to now, and I'm playing three free MMORPGs that I've downloaded. All three are 3D, and pretty spiffy for being free (you know, I just realized what a mouthful that would be to say). I'd only ever played Diablo 2 before, so I can now better see the appeal of MMORPGs in general. I enjoy myself for the most part, a character among hundreds of others trying to survive in a harsh, fictional world. Then those other characters try to interact with me. That's where the problems start.

It's mostly me more than anyone else. I think I get annoyed too easily. I'm sure those people who invite me to a party aren't trying to irritate me; they just want someone to help them out with monsters that are a bit out of their league. And I don't usually type "Not interested", or something to that effect to let them know that I'm perfectly happy gaming on my own. Maybe that's why they feel the need to invite me FIVE MORE TIMES (what, sixth time's the charm?). Of course, anyone who's played an MMORPG knows this kind of stuff. People asking for items they're too lazy to go and earn themselves (I'm not giving you an item that a level one monster drops. You're level 10, for god's sakes. Get off your virtual butt and work for it like the rest of us!), players who seem to make it their personal mission to ruin the game for everyone else, etc. and so forth.

Still, it's seems odd for me to be playing a game genre that's main focal point is interaction with others when half the time I don't want anyone to even talk to me. I mean, most MMORPGs aren't really made to be played solo. You join parties with others, take on dungeons, make new friends, blah, blah, blah. And a few occasions I have bitten the bullet and accepted a party invite, as long as I'm not working on a quest of my own. And I've helped a few newbies who really seem to genuinely need the help. I don't have a problem with them. But for the most part, I make my time playing MMORPGs a solitary one. I suppose it sort of feels more rewarding to me to be able to tackle impossible odds by my lonesome. I just want to grind my levels and do whatever quests are available without anyone bugging me. Oh well. If I'm going to keep playing, I should just deal with the annoyances like everyone else does. Lord knows other players have probably had worst experiences.
