RESPONSE TO: Non-editorial: or, What I Did Instead
Jeffrey talks about an experiment where he avoided gaming for roughly a week, got things done, became sociable, saw some sun. I'm beginning to think I need to do the same thing, but take it a step or two further. I look around my bedroom and see laundry baskets, boxes from moving home for the summer, and games strewn about the floor because I haven't had time to put my storage unit back together so I have a place to put them (heresy, I know). Then I walk out into the hallway, where there are more boxes along with my storage unit which has no drawers because there are things piled in them in various other rooms. Finally, I go into what was once my "computer room" (but with my laptop I have no need for such a room) and find a disaster area consisting of the rest of my boxes, suitcases turned upside down with things falling out of them, and an overall inability to go more than two feet inside the room without risk to bodily injury.
Why haven't I unpacked? Well, the first time I had the urge to unpack I ended up hooking up my Wii to the living room TV instead and playing Super Paper Mario. This went on for about a week and a half until I beat the game. Then Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess found its way into my Wii and Odin Sphere took over the rest of my life upstairs in the PS2. Now both games are finished and what do I do? I put Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time in my Wii (the GCN version) and Xenosaga in my PS2!
In the middle of this, I have had several urges to put the games down and unpack. I put the games down, no problem. But did I unpack? No, I picked up a book. And bought more books, which are joining the games on the floor because my bookcase is in disarray behind the suitcase pile. Then IRC came into the picture, and a month passed...and about all I've accomplished is doing my laundry because I had nothing clean and I could do laundry and play games at the same time...
So, I have decided that I need to set aside a few days and ignore my books, ignore my games, and completely ignore IRC, and see what I can accomplish. Ideally, I'd like to get things unpacked and sorted out, things organized, laundry put away, and a chance to go out in that beautiful Wisconsin weather and just enjoy it. Wish me luck, I'll need it.
Now, if you'll excuse me, I have a game to finish...
