Revisiting the Past

Isn't it amazing how you can play an RPG and love every single minute of it? You claim it as a favorite and swear that you are going to play through it again as soon as you finish the next game on your plate. Seriously, it was just that good. Well, the next thing you know two years have past and you've yet to pick the game back up. Heck, in some cases there could even be a brand new system out to play RPGs on or the game that was a favorite has a sequel that was just released. With the continuous flood of RPGs and complete lack of free time that seems to come with age, you may never get back to that game. But for the sake of discussion, let's say you do. You finally pick up that old favorite and pop it in. How many times do you find yourself reevaluating your love of the title? The plot twists in the story have lost all shock value, combat seems to drag on, and the fetch quests seem more...fetchy. Things aren't always as you remember. It's truly sad to enjoy something at one time, but when it is revisited, it just isn't what it once was. Such is the ever-changing nature of RPGs.

What is it that causes this? Is it the constant improvement of RPGs or do RPGs not age as well? Can you play Final Fantasy IV and enjoy it as much as you once did? What about newer titles like Xenosaga Episode I or Final Fantasy X? Do things really change that quickly or do we change? I just don't know.
