Wii You Be Mine?
!
!

Stephanie "Angel" McArdle
STAFF EDITORIALIST

At the beginning of every console generation, there is a lot of debate over which system will be better. Which one is going to have the library of games we are most hyped about? Which one is going to be more "pretty" graphics-wise? Which one is going to burn the smallest hole in our pockets?

I decided I wanted Wii (formerly Revolution) long before the Xbox 360 even hit the shelves. Why? Mainly because of the virtual console. I'm going to be going away to a university this fall, living in the dorms. Why would I want to bring the multitude of systems I have hooked up in my room now when I can manage with just two? Mind you, I won't be able to bring the GameCube even if I wanted to. It isn't mine. It is my mom's. I haven't even really been able to play it unless I'm playing a multiplayer game with my parents. So why buy a GameCube when I can get Wii and be able to play my favorite SNES games along with it? And what about those classic NES games that I love? Let's not forget to mention the few N64 games that I did enjoy playing but we never bought.

Then, E3 2006 came along and gave me another good reason to purchase Wii over the other systems. The launch titles, to me, are worth going to Wii first. Two titles are especially appealing to me: Dragon Quest Swords: The Masked Queen and Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. The fact that not one of our E3 correspondants that I've discussed Wii with really had anything negative to say about the console, or the demos they played of Twilight Princess, speaks volumes to me.

Now we are given another little tidbit of Wii news that pretty much seals the deal for me: Wii's tentative price point. Wii is coming out around $250. That is less than one paycheck for me. I can easily set aside that kind of money this summer and still save up for the two launch titles I want as well as those necessary accessories that every new console needs. Let's face it, a girl on a college budget like me can't afford something like the PS3 with the $600 hole it will burn in everyone's pocket, and I have no interest in the Xbox 360 at any price.

Wii has already sold itself to me. Now I just have to play the same waiting game I've been playing with Final Fantasy XII, wondering idlly when it is actually going to be in my possession. (Yes, I know FFXII finally has a release date, but October doesn't say much. That's like saying a book I've been dying to read will be out in October. I want to know what part of the month to look forward to, not just the month itself!)
