Jump to Conclusions

Michael "Macstorm" Cunningham
STAFF EDITORIALIST

From the movie Office Space

Tom Smykowski: It's a "Jump to Conclusions mat." You see, you have this mat, with different *conclusions* written on it that you could *jump to*.
Michael Bolton: That's the worst idea I've ever heard in my life, Tom.
Samir: Yes, this is horrible, this idea.

Yes, that is a horrible idea. Yet people can't seem to help but do it. Within a small time after the showing of the Final Fantasy XIII trailer people are already hating on it. People are upset that the director of Final Fantasy X-2 is working on it. They are mad that the main character looks too much like Yuna. Others claim that they don't like that it seems to be an action based game. Wow, all of that from a minute long video clip and a few vague comments about the game. Just wow.

I can understand the comment about the main character looking like the love child of Cloud and Yuna, but that's one little aspect of the game. They could also change her looks before the game comes out. They did with Ashe of Final Fantasy XII. Even if they don't, is that enough to disapprove of the game already? The item that seems to have most people in an uproar is that Motomu Toriyama, director of Final Fantasy X-2, has taken the helm of Final Fantasy XIII. Ok, so Final Fantasy X-2 wasn't a masterpiece by any means, but does that mean one must immediately condemn Toriyama's next offering? Do people have to be so quick to judge? It seems that way. Motomu Toriyama also served as Event Director on Final Fantasy X, a favorite of many. There is a chance that in the three years since Final Fantasy X-2 that he may have learned a few things. It's true that he may not have, but there is no need to jump to that conclusion just yet. Give the poor guy a chance.

The other big item is the battle system. In one small section of the trailer it showed what was most likely a player controlled battle. There was a lot of fast paced action and that has many people on the bandwagon that this will be an action RPG or at least a more action based game. Well, first off they also announced Final Fantasy Versus XIII to be a direct sequel and action based game. I would say that they are not going to have two action RPGs. Much like Final Fantasy XII's move away from random battles, this new battle system will most likely be something completely new. In one of the screenshots found here, you can see an action menu of sorts at the bottom of the screen. There is a status bar that lists "ATB Cost" and is most likely a way of using abilities, as the abilities listed in the bottom left corner are given point values, much like magic spells of the past. Fire is listed as 40, Attack as 30 and so on. The battle system seems like it will very likely be menu driven, not the random button mashing of an action RPG, but I'll not jump to that conclusion. How about we wait for a little more information before we condemn or praise anything about this game?

I guess it's just Final Fantasy withdrawal. There's not been a traditional Final Fantasy since 2001's release of Final Fantasy X. In that time we've gotten Final Fantasy XI, Final Fantasy X-2, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles, Final Fantasy Tactics Advance and many other remakes. None of them have been able to please the masses enough to bring people out of their withdrawal. Maybe we'll get lucky and actually playing Final Fantasy XII this fall will give fans the fix they need to survive until Final Fantasy XIII comes around. Maybe we'll be even luckier and Final Fantasy XIII will come out in a reasonable amount of time. Either way, let's not jump to conclusions about a game that we know very little about.
