Caution: Spoilers Ahead!
Are you still reading? Why? I warned you that there were spoilers ahead. I guess you don't care. Ok, this is your last chance to stop reading. Don't say I didn't warn you. Here's the big surprise...this editorial ends with a period. Shocker, I'm sure!
Why do people want to know how the story ends before they play a game? Why would anyone want to know about the biggest twist in the game before getting to it? I just don't understand. Isn't one of the points of playing an RPG to enjoy the story and all of the surprises it contains? Well, it always has been for me.
I've always enjoyed the shock factor of plot twists. Be it the death of a character, the revelation of a villain, or the introduction of a new party member, these surprises are the most enjoyable part of an RPG's story. I hate when these twists are ruined for me by accident as was the case when Next Generation magazine released a preview disc with Final Fantasy VII videos that included a clip of Sephiroth killing a certain character. Needless to say, this caused the game not to have the same level of impact for me as it would have had I not seen the clip.
I compare my enjoyment of Final Fantasy VII to that of Final Fantasy X, because I went into FFX with no prior knowledge of the game. I not only enjoyed FFX's story, but every aspect of the game, as I knew nothing of the battle system or characters either. It was all exciting. With FFVII, I had played the demo, had seen the major shocker, and had listened to the soundtrack. I still enjoyed Final Fantasy VII, but I had ruined the thrill factor completely by accident. Why some people go out of their way to read about spoilers, I just don't understand.
I prefer to avoid spoilers as best I can. The best way to do this is by ignoring spoiler posts on message boards and avoiding soundtrack titles. Message boards are a main source of spoilers. If you frequent message boards, you have to stay on your guard constantly if you are trying to avoid spoilers. Many soundtracks have tracks entitled something along the lines of "Death of 'Character'" or "Final Battle with 'Villain'", so we have to adjust to spoilers being everywhere and avoid them the best we can. That is unless you are one of those people that enjoy spoilers.
Maybe someone out there can explain it to me. Why do people enjoy spoilers? Is it impatience or something else? I have a best friend that would always do this. He would read the end of a book first and search out spoilers for all the big movies and games. I never could understand the fascination with this, and he never could explain why. Maybe someone else out there can do so.
I do want to use this last little bit as a plea to those who enjoy spoilers to please take into consideration that not everyone wants to ruin a game's plot. Please don't ruin things for those of us that don't want to know. Oh and just so that I don't let you down, there will be a period at the end of this editorial. Sorry if I spoiled the ending for you.
