Link from the Legend of Zelda series is perhaps one of the most known and most loved video game characters of all time. Hailing from the old school Nintendo days, he's right up there with Mario and Donkey Kong. But what makes this silent, green-clad hero so beloved? He's saved the princess and the land more times than anyone can count, yet asks for nothing in return. The ladies love him and the gents want to be him. He's the universal hero and an all-around awesome guy.
Throughout his many tales, he has come from a modest background. He's taken on numerous personas, including a commoner, a farmboy, and an outsider. I think these simple and understandable origins allow more people to relate to him. He's not a knight or a noble, just a fellow who will do what he must to keep the land safe and thwart evil. As with the Triforce, he too has shown signs of courage, strength, and wisdom. He's the people's hero who has risen above and against all odds.
Link is the very definition of the good guy. He's always humble and takes the time to aid those in need. With his fierce dedication and determination, he's someone who doesn't give up. He shows no discrimination against the people of Hyrule, having made friends with people of all races and even with enemies. He has a great sense of curiosity and exploration, daring all sorts of dangerous locals to discover what he must. Be it dark dungeons, frightening forests, or scary seas, he stands with courage in the face of danger and uncertainty. When fate calls upon him to battle evil, he answers with vigor. People all over the land can count on Link. These many traits are considered to be of great moral value across many cultures.
His good deeds are numerous and well known. He's come to the rescue of everyone from the princess of Hyrule to his own sister. He helped Malon and Talon overcome Ingo's vicious stranglehold on Lon Lon Ranch. He's traded items to people in need along his journey. When the entire city of the Zoras had mysteriously been frozen with little to no clues, he worked tirelessly to discover the cause and save them. He traveled across dimensions to reunite two brothers, the swordsmiths. When his Uncle died, he fought valiantly to fulfill his dying wish. Whether his task is to battle villains or just help someone on the road, he's always done so.
There's a bit of Link in all of us. That is to say, he's a representation of inherent human compassion, kindness, courage, and all that is good in the world. Deep down we all have a desire to do what is right, to correct injustice, to help others, and to protect all that is dear to us. What he symbolizes is something not restricted to race, gender, age, religion, or anything of the like. Everyone loves him because everyone has something about his adventures they can relate to and make a connection with. This universal appeal truly creates a link between all of us.
