Don't Judge A Game By Its Demo

What makes Final Fantasy? Is it the story? The music? Perhaps even the battle system? None of the above? Final Fantasy has never been the same from game to game. Even when they went out on a limb to make a direct sequel, it wasn't the same. Every time, though, and it never fails, people complain that they changed something. Old school verses new school verses the even newer class. What's the latest target of the griping? Final Fantasy XII.

I suppose it was bothering me to listen to everyone complain about a game before they even saw the demo for it. Then, once the demo came out with Dragon Quest VIII, more complaints arose. One thing I noticed, though, about the demo? They give you very little instruction on what's going on. The demo, quite literally, is only a taste of what is to come. It is by no means written in stone yet. There was no instruction on how to use the new battle system, which every new game inevitably has at the beginning, so the system seems frustrating. Then you take some time to play with it, and it starts to grow on you.

Once the battle system itself grows on you, however, you start to realize something else to complain about. Battle music? No battle music? How on Earth are you going to live without it? To be honest, the overworld music in the demo areas sounded a whole lot like traditional Final Fantasy battle music to me. So what if they did away with the "suck you into battle with some ineffective transition screen while the music switches over" and made the music more effective? It's different, and that's all that is wrong with it. Yet people still need to complain.

Last thing that's irritating is that everyone says that Final Fantasy XII is Final Fantasy XI trying to be a console RPG. But who is saying that, really? People that don't play Final Fantasy XI. Looking back through the last few weeks of Q&A, you will notice a very strong underlying theme: Twelve is in no way close to Eleven. This comes from actual Final Fantasy XI players. Stop griping about the game being like something it isn't.

Lots of complaining this time around. I think I'll just leave you with the immortal words that flash before your eyes in the beginning of the demo: "Gameplay in this demo version of Final Fantasy XII may differ from the final release version."
