Thanksgiving is a time for giving thanks and taking time to appreciate things that you have. So I spent my Thanksgiving building a list of things that I'm thankful for. This is what I came up with.
Living in Wisconsin, one would think I'd be used to the cold air by now. I'm not. So one of the things I'm most thankful for is warmth. I'm not talking Florida summer warmth, but just let the furnace kick in and curl up in blankets warmth. Blankets are another thing I'm thankful for. Nothing's better than relaxing with some nice warm fuzzy blankets and playing video games on a cold winter day. And yes, I mean winter. Wisconsin and the surrounding areas got winter early this year. We skipped autumn and went straight to winter.
Another thing I discovered I was thankful for was EarthBound. It has been my companion over break since I can't afford Dragon Quest VIII until Friday. So it appears that EarthBound has gotten me out of my gaming slump as well. Nothing beats running around and fighting off hippies with baseball bats and having a photographer with the catch line of "Say fuzzy pickles!"
I am also thankful for having parents who love video games just as much as I do. In fact, they are the ones that got me introduced to video games at a young age in the first place. We all like our own genres, but it's still awesome that I can actually talk to my parents about games. Mom and I share a passion for Zelda games, though I never get to play them because she doesn't let me. She loves adventure games and not much of the traditional turn-based RPGs that I tend to play. Dad has found his own little niche in the first person shooter genre.
I'm really thankful for the people who are starting to think about writing editorials again. I'll be even more thankful, and grateful, when a backlog starts forming. With that note, I'm also thankful for having the opportunity to work for RPGamer and all the people I've met in the last few months since I've started hanging around in the IRC channel. You guys are the best friends I've had in a long time.
I will be thankful for Dragon Quest VIII and Magna Carta when I can afford them in the coming month. I am looking forward to having new games to play. I may even be getting my hands on a Nintendo DS far sooner than I would have expected and will be thankful for that as well.
And finally, I'm thankful for the twelve times I've said thankful in this editorial. Though the coming holidays are filled with unhappy memories for me, I am making the most of it. I am grateful for the close family members that I have and all the wonderful memories of those who are no longer with me. This Thanksgiving truly was a time to say thanks for everything that I still have and I hope everyone else did the same.
