Like much of the crowd that attends RPGamer, I love role-playing games. They’re extremely long games, some clocking in over a hunred hours (in my case, that would be a max-stats run for the whole party in Final Fantasy X). Even the smaller ones are twice to three times as long as the everyday action game. The amount of time it takes to beat an RPG, to its fullest, is one of the many reasons we are the rulers of the gaming universe. But lately, we’ve been lacking in the aspect of philosophy and writing. Yes, I said philosophy.
It all started many years ago when RPGs hit mainstream. A new niche of gamers was created, a niche that has come to rule the virtual world. I’m talking about us, the RPGers. We like them long, we like them brimming with story, we like them pumped over the edge with side quests, and the best part? We like to travel across the globe to save the world. Other gaming genres really don’t take you that far. The action games are usually set in one area. The fighting games let you travel the world, but only to fight one other person. The platform games set you into sequential stages, and usually you just go down one path. And this continues throughout the rest of gaming types.
The fun begins when we come in though! Imagine if all gamers inhabited a real world of their own. We are the rulers of the gaming world, period, no questions asked. We dominate with our questions on the philosophy of your RPGs. We dominate because we travel through all kinds of weather, thru meteors about to crash into the planet, to the Moon, thru deserts, tundra, jungles, we’ve traversed entire worlds and possibly other planets. That is why I implore you to write more editorials. It only takes about half an hour to get it down on paper. Just think of all the thoughts you’ve ever had on RPGs. Then formulate them into one cohesive topic that in turn will supply you with multiple paragraphs of differences. It’s not like there aren’t enough topics out there, it just might be that you don’t have the time. That’s understandable, but it’s also nice to hear the opinions of others on different topics.
We are the gamers who become the kings, queens, bards if necessary, philosophers, and leaders, all the top dog positions. I’m not insulting other types of gamers, but it’s just what we’re good at. The adventurers are the people we send to explore new regions; the action gamers become the military; puzzle gamers create the cities to run in an orderly fashion; the list goes on and on. So it’s our duty to write on topics concerning role-playing games. I for one think we’ve become sort of lazy in this endeavor. Yes, many of you don’t have the time, that’s cool. But for those of you who do, just sit down for a few minutes, collect your thoughts, and get it down in an orderly fashion. Not only does it keep the editorial manager from going crazy, but it also has the added benefit of refreshing our minds by reading your ideas. So come on dreamers! We’ve got writing to do!
