Philip Bloom
STAFF EDITORIALIST

Seven years ago, August 20th, 1997.

Andrew Vestal stepped up to the plate to speak to his readers and explain why he was not going to head a petition to have Final Fantasy VII redone with an Aerith Revival, writing a gentle heartfelt tribute to her role in the game. A simple thing, the owner of the site speaking to his readers. Nothing...too important. This event marked the beginning of the Editorials section here upon the site. A section that we, the people, quickly stepped up to taking over.

I wasn't around then, when Alex bore the torch up, lighting it and getting the editorials underway. He passed it to Brad, who continued the early development, the oldest Editorials page still on the site bearing his moniker. Jeff Davis stepped up to the plate in late 1999 to keep the section alive, followed by Hunter Wilcox who took the tough position of keeping the section going after Jeff got burned out. The torch was then passed to Darien, the first Editorial Curator I was aware of before doing this little touch of research. Darien, as I understand it, brought together the Editorials corner and began the trend of the Editorial Curators helping provide a fair amount of the Editorials, followed by what's possibly one of the better and more active squads of Editorialists the site had seen. Among them the recently reappeared Melinda Nguyen and Catherine Rain, folks that left their mark for the past four years. Melinda Nguyen then took over, running the great editorials contest of 2000, leading what was one of the more successful eras of the editorials section. Following them, Sean Peters took the mast until the section disappeared sadly under the waves in late 2002 before Joseph Witham and Cortney Stone lifted it out of the rubble and formed it into the editorials section we see today. A pretty long road, these last seven years. Lots of ups, lots of downs. The section has taken its fair share of beatings.

We now bid farewell to Joseph, who has done a great job putting the place back together, and enter yet another stage in the long play of Editorials. We'll miss him here as he moves on to the public relations of the site, and well, now the torch gets passed to me. I can't say I've been around ages like some of the previous folks here. I inherit here a section that's still struggling for life. A past reasonably dignified and deserving of respect to reflect upon, and a future to take hold of. I'd like to say hello to all of you out there and welcome you to the next stage in the life of the Editorials section. Our section and our voice to the world, yours and mine. I have great things in mind for the section. I want to see it grow, because I like it quite a lot. I want to see not a return to the days of old, but new glory brought to the section as the people's voice rises to be one of the best and most energetic sections on RPGamer. We've got a long road ahead of us. I'd like to see this column rise, to get more folks active in the chats and on the forums, and most specifically to make this column about you guys; the people.

I want to see this place become a hub of interactivity. I'm going to change the way things are done here so that we can be more useful to helping you guys out. I want to see this place get more than just treatises on game design. I want to see all the flavors of your imagination; Stories about your lives, analysis about characters that interest you, things that make you laugh, things that made you cry, even things that made you angry. This column is what you guys make of it, and we're going to work our best to make it the best we can. I've got tons of ideas, but without your creativity, wit, and pens, they'll amount to nothing for the section. Let's take charge of the place folks, and make it the best editorials section ever.
