REBUTTAL TO: Off course RPGs are easy
I'm really getting tired of RPGs that are too easy. If you can go through a
game without getting killed at all, what's the point in playing?
Difficulty in RPGs is often misunderstood. The common argument against it
is that you can defeat anything by simply building levels. That is true.
However, building levels is boring. Being underleveled forces players to
use some strategy. Should I use my last few MP points to heal myself, or
should I save them for the boss? Should I take out the boss's henchmen
first, or should I focus on defeating the boss? Sure, you could level up
for a few hours and not have any trouble, but I'd rather play the game.
I'm not advocating a difficulty level seen in Final Fantasy I, Dragon
Warrior I, Dragon Warrior II or The 7th Saga because those games are simply
too hard. You have to spend a long time leveling up to have any chance at
them because the enemies are way too strong. No amount of strategy can
change that.
Games such as Breath of Fire II, Final Fantasy IIIj and all of the recent
Dragon Warror games are at the difficulty level I'm looking for. You'll
probably get stuck a few times, but it's nothing that you'll have to level
up for hours to get past. Just keep trying. You'll win eventually.
Next time you get stuck on a tough boss, don't level up for hours. Try a
different strategy. Try casting a spell that you've never tried before.
Trust me, it's a lot more fun than leveling up and you'll feel good when you
finally beat it.
