REBUTTAL TO: An Ol’ Thing Called Classic

This isn’t a rebuttal so much as a companion editorial to the one written by Sesshi, which was a very compelling piece.

I too have been slightly disheartened by the seemingly large downward spiral that the series has taken. But not all change is bad. Au Contrair, change is good, in moderation. Too much change, and the fans and masses might get upset that the familiar and friendly is gone, only to be replaced with something that might seem unfriendly and intimidating. It’s like having your favorite snack updated, with new flavors and/or tastes. It takes away from the glory and majesty of the “original”, the “Classic”, the “Alpha” of your memories. The “New & Improved”, makes your tastes look “Old & Inferior”. And the original innvoator gets lost in the shuffle. I apologize for the digressing, but it was all to make a point.

Evolution in games in inevitable, just like evolution in clothing styles, musical tastes, and automobiles. After awhile, the next big thing comes along, and companies, conglomorates, and corporations must appease the masses. Unfortunelty, that means that today’s thing becomes an “Oldie Goldie”. Why do you think the phrase “Instant Classic” was coined? Because just as soon as everyone gets a taste of something they absolutely loved, they want more. Only this time, it must be bigger better, and the “New & Improved” aspect comes into play yet again, and the “Instant Classic” becomes Old & Inferior, and more often than not, gets shunted into the sidelines.

To conclude, the progression in gaming is something that is an unstoppable force. New things will be discovered, and they will be applied. The result will be a new breed of game, ready to be received by the masses. Whether the reaction will be a resounding cheer in joyful tones, or a solemn groan, the energy generated by the arrival of a new type of game is a testament to just how much gaming impacts pop culture today. Despite the big “Retro” and “Old School” and “Throwback” themes of late, its always easy to pop in an old disc/cartridge and relive the old days. New games deserve at least a throughout glance, because as long as the old games are preserved, they will never die. Like cheese and wine, the old ones always get better with age…
