SPOILERS FOR: Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy IX

I have a proposition to make. What if, in some loosely based way, every installment in the Final Fantasy series revolved around the seventh and ninth installments? Let me first apologize for being so vague with this bold statement, as I know it may sound very much like blasphemy, perhaps even a bit taboo if you will? In any case, let me begin to give the reasons for why I believe this to be a subtle reason for why Final Fantasy has yet to be “final.”

As many of you may recall from Final Fantasy VII, it was clearly stated that the Ancients were a nomadic race of people, and that their journey was made from planet to planet in their extremely arduous search of the Promised Land. I would imagine, given the fact that the universe is extremely vast, that this search took thousands upon thousands of years and that they visited countless planets in the never-ending sea of stars. With that said, what if each and every world in every installment of the series was a planet that, at some point in time, had been visited by the Ancients? I know, it’s probably hard to fathom and a bit much to swallow, but isn’t it an ingenious idea to think about in a series that seems so boundless, and with no end is sight?

As I stated above, the series would also revolve around the ninth edition as well. I am referring to the source of all things -- the Crystal. Take into account that Jenova never seemed to have a purpose for why it set out after the Ancients. There was no truly specific motive for why it followed, attacked, and killed the Ancients. It was left up to the interpretation of the players. So my interpretation is this: Jenova is sort of like the Crystals opposite. It’s an evil, cancerous plague. As the Crystal is the creator, Jenova would be the destroyer. If the Crystal is the alpha, Jenova would be the omega, and it would oppose everything that the Crystal stood for and does. Now let us take into account this; what if the Ancients were the first sentient life forms that the Crystal gave life to? Would Jenova not set out to eradicate them, due to its imposition as the fabled destroyer?

As we all know, somewhere along the line, the Ancients began their planetary search across the stars for the Promised Land. Thus begins the Final Fantasy series, until the eventuality of number seven, wherein many of the Ancients settle upon the planet in which the story takes place. And that also results in Jenova’s coming and its eventual assault upon the Ancients who had already settled and made that world their new home. However, in some way or another, Jenova was dealt with, perhaps by the planet itself, and was brought to Midgar, which is really what the story was all about -- an experiment on a mysterious alien life form gone wrong, and the repercussions for the scientific dealings that took place. In a certain sense, you could say that FFVII is trying to make a statement: messing with things we don’t quite fully understand will and can have profound results, including the possibility of the world’s destruction.

Let us shift our focus back to FFIX for a moment, during the final battle against Necron, who stated after the party defeated it that it would one day return and that it’s an eternal being. Perhaps it was reborn as the infamous being called Jenova, and that its quest to “destroy all life, and all forms of it” was simply hindered, and not completely thwarted by Zidane and his comrades. It in turn wasn’t just the Ancients that Jenova was after, but instead, all life itself -- wherever it may exist or existed at one point in time. Jenova was mainly after the Ancients for fear that they would spread life across the known universe, making its job to end everything that much more difficult, so it sought them out and targeted them as its primary focus.

Regardless of what you may take from this, I would just like to finalize my opinion by stating it is just that -- an opinion. I am hopeful that many may agree, or at least consider it as a possible reality, and I welcome those who may creatively argue against this point. Either way, it would undoubtedly make for a really neat link in the Final Fantasy chain.
