Warning: Numberless Xenogears spoilers within

Xenogears is one of my absolute favorite RPGs of all time. With a plot so bloody intricate that I had to play though it twice just to get an idea of what was truly happening, I cannot help but love it. How many hours have I spent buried in religious texts hunting down the true meanings of the various bits of catechism referenced in the game? Right now, I bathe in the pleasant light of my third victory over it, that lovely ending theme still reverberating in my ears and making me happy, and I wonder, not for the first time, what happened at the end?

Sadly Xenogears came in the middle of an era not yet passed, in which mostly inconclusive endings are in vogue. We saw that all the main character survived. That’s about it. Why would such a beautifully plot-bound game leave us with so little at the end? I know not. But I can theorize on what happened, and this the conclusion I reached: the world will belong to Citan.

The greatest minds of what remains of humanity are the Three Sages of Shevat, and the strongest ruler is Queen Zephyr. However, all have had their lives extended vastly beyond the normal limits of humanity in order to oppose Solaris and Deus. Both are gone by the end of the game. The Queen’s job is done, as are the Sages’, and they are going to want to pass on. No matter what kind of technology one employs, the human psyche just isn’t built to endure five hundred years of existence. Our minds are geared toward to try to fit all our living into a mere handful of decades, and near immortality will not change that. Such patience just isn’t natural to us. The call of the grave will be too strong for Zephyr and the Sages to ignore for long now that their tasks are through.

Thus, the world will be left without a leader. Who will take over? It is likely the few remaining humans will want to leave the arctic for more habitable lands, and a vast majority will stay together for mutual support and form a single community. Thus, they are going to want someone to lead them to the best land, and rule them wisely. Citan will be the obvious candidate for the first task, who better to find premier land than a man of science? The people will probably want one of the main characters to lead them; who better to rule than heroes who saved them?

It will come down between Fei, Elly, and Bart. Fei will have become unavoidably famous for leading the charge against Deus, Elly will still have a large following from the Nisan sect, and Bart will have his royal blood and reputation of liberating Aveh and calling the truce. It may be that Citan is elected directly on the virtue of his intelligence, but it is more likely that one of the more visible heroes will be chosen in the end. Still, the new leader will defer to Citan every time. It was rare that they ever argued against him during the game, and his genius is well known to them all. It will be Citan the new leader will turn to for advice, and it will be Citan’s advice that they will be most likely to heed. Citan will become the power behind the throne, and make most of the real decisions.

Finally, there is the issue of the loss of ether energy. Only Fei’s gear still functions in the end, but will a war machine be left intact when there are so many other uses for its power? Who will be the one who figures out how to extract or perhaps amplify that energy, who as even a fraction of the knowledge needed to even try, and who proved that he loved to tinker with things like that in the beginning of the game? It is conceivable that Xenogears may become the next Zohar Modifier, possibly trapping the Wave Existence once more within itself.

This brings me to another point. With the application of Krelian's nanomachines, Deus was able to extend its influence to the molecular level. It is very possible that some of these nanomachines managed to survive Deus’ destruction. If enough survived, they may contain sufficient information to begin rebuilding the weapons system at a molecular level. The journey of a thousand miles begins with a simple step.

Also, it is quite possible that Miang survived Deus’ destruction. If Elly was able to withdraw herself from Deus, what was to stop Miang from doing the same? Consider that Miang and Elly had once again merged into the True Mother, so it would be hard to pull Elly from Deus without removing Miang as well. The combined personality would have to be drawn out first, then Elly removed from it, leaving Miang separate and free to leave as well.

With Miang free, the possibility of Deus reconstructing itself, and the potential for Xenogears to become another Zohar Modifier, the cycle would begin anew. The new world formed after Ragnarok is darkened by the passing of a dragon’s shadow over the Plain of Vigrid...
