by JMSourbeer RPGs, to begin, have always been a favorite genre I like to play, and even if I am not the foremost expert on every one, like some of you claim to be, I still know what makes a great RPG, you. Every RPG in existence has been blasted by someone or another, and loved by someone else. A great RPG is an experience that only you can enjoy. I have been around since the beginnings, and have played many games. Many people, dislike FF games because they, tell a story about a character you didn't create. I like all of them (I did have some problems with VIII, but hey that's my problem, nothing can change that now). An RPG, of any sort is great if captures it's audience and makes them feel satisfied for playing it. Many argue that it must be entertaining at least most of the time, and I believe that too. What's the point of playing if you're not enjoying it? Many blast VII and VIII for leaving old school. I, with many others, said who cares, we liked the story, or the graphics, or the battle system. As long as it pleases you, that's all that matters. Now, granted, there are some other factors. Many say RPG nowadays are over advertised. I say, what the heck? I personally would like to see more people hear about these games, so they too can enjoy the game. They say, the advertising takes away from the game. I say, what's the big deal, none of the commercials spoil the game, they don't remove some mystic veil they simply do their job inform people that such a game exists. Who says a game can't attract an audience, is their some rule that says only original gamer's can play new games or that a commercial disrupts the mysticism of a game? And about the MTV ads? Think about, what channel do a considerable number of America's youth watch? MTV! Some other factors come to mind as well. An RPG, must, in my opinion, make a person relate to a character in a way that means something to them (I thought Cloud and FFVI were great and FFVIII stunk, but that's is my opinion). In addition, it must convey it's meaning clearly, to the gamer, and as long as it does, it's great. The point is that a battle system (although I thought VIII's stunk), or graphics, or whatever it is really doesn't matter as long as it pleases the gamer. RPGs will continue to evolve, and as long as they continue to please and uphold a good story, etc., whatever it is for you, they are great, no matter what one or another thinks of them. The focus of this editorial is not to make a person like a certain game or change their opinions, but understand that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. |
