RPGamers Aren't ALL Nerds, Geeks, and Antisocial -- But I Am

by Jeff K.

Before I say anything, there's a few things you have to know about me. I am labeled a "Loser" at school. It doesn't bother me, though. I don't go to school dances or any sort of school function. It's not my bag. I would prefer to play RPG's. And that brings me to my point.

To say that all people who play RPG's are losers and nerds and such would be a load of monkey snot. In fact, I've talked to some of the popular people and they said they've played Final Fantasy 7, beaten it, and enjoyed it. I know FF7 is hugely successful, so the fact that they've played it is no surprise. But FF7 IS an RPG, is it not?

I know this concept of popular people playing RPG's may sound strange to some, but it's the truth. They attract people from all walks of life. Losers, freaks, goths, preps, jocks, they all at one point or another have played an RPG. I know not ALL of one specific type has, but there's at least one person of each type that has played an RPG.

You don't necessarily have to be smart to play an RPG, either. I admit that I'm kinda stupid, and I love 'em. I mean, my grades are kinda average, so I'm no rocket scientist, but I understood over 80% of Xenogears' story. That IS a tough game to figure out at times, too. Even my genius, straight-A student friend admitted he got confused at times.

And then there are those close-minded people. They say "RPG's are for losers! RPG's are for nerds!" Yes, there are people like that who make RPG's their life, but not everybody does.

So, in conclusion, you shouldn't judge a person just by the kinds of video games they play. (Although if they vehemently avoid RPG's, they're missing some great games). I'd like to close this editorial with a quote from Dennis Miller. "But that's just my opinion. I could be wrong."
