RPG Sagas

by Jim

Often times when one accomplishes an Rpg, they feel pretty good. At long last there has finally been an end. But often times, it can be sad to say goodbye to the characters, that we as the players have come to know and attatched to, when they vanish with the end of the game.

That's because we as the player have used and watched these characters over the many weeks as we tried to finish a game. We watch thier relationships, thier hardships. we live through thier burdens and thier grief. Often times we are saddened by one's death (example: Aeris) and overcome with joy at thier return(Rydia). All that the characters go through, we go through with them. But at the end we all have to say goodbye, and let them go forever.

While sometimes this may not be the case, and we may yet see them again in another game, we really can't control them or once again become a part of thier lives. And when we can, it usually is not the same. (Take Erghiez for example. The FF7 characters were there sure, but was it really quite the same?)

Why can't Rpg companies make it so that these characters might be playable in future Rpg's. Woudn't anybody want to take control of Cloud again, and play out another adventure with him and his pals? How about another adventure for the Xenogear characters? What about Crono's trip to find his mom? Or maybe familiar characters helping new ones in another adventure? How about Link starting another adventure in a sequel with everything he has obtained from the last game?

With ingenuity and willpower, it could happen. How? Well these systems do have memory cards. And if used correctly, they could be the key to bringing games like these into effect. So what could a producer do to market a game like this and make it work? How about at the end of each Rpg, character data and finishing stats are saved at the conclusion of a game. The when or if a sequel of that Rpg comes out, the data on the memory card could be transferred to the sequel, bringing character stats from the previous game.

Everything the player has worked for to help shape the character is back, and the player can restablish his link to the characters, and watch thier stories move on from there.

It is probably a stupid idea to most, but hell it's worth a shot to make it known. What do other people think?
