by Bill Johnson [Editor's Note: I know I said personal attacks are pretty much bad mojo, but in this case I made an exception based on the belief that I don't think Gwendolyn Snope is a real person. If she is, and is reading this, then I apologize, but frankly, you asked for it. - Brad] To whom it may concern, Dr. Laura, the popular radio personality and moral barometer in this country, Exactly what qualifies her as America's "moral barometer"? Perhaps the similarity of her political views to your own? That's hardly an objective credential. has recently been going on tangents about the immorality and absurd freedoms of the Internet and now, after seeing your site, I know that Dr. Laura is always right. Can you say "ridiculous overgeneralization"? Nobody on this planet is ALWAYS right. Additionally, topics discussed on Dr. Laura's program are frequently matters of opinion, for which there are no clearly defined right or wrong beliefs. I have never seen such a blatant attempt at turning our defenseless children away from God as I have at your site. At this point, I can't help but ask: are you sure you wrote to the correct web site? www.rpgamer.com ? Maybe you're thinking of www.mephistopheles.net instead? I can see right through your agenda, heathens, with your endless talk of Witchcraft spells and magical objects. Ma'am, in case you somehow didn't notice, RPGamer is a video game site. Specifically, role-playing video games. These games frequently make use of such fantasy elements as magic and relics. It is quite obvious that your Liberal agenda is to introduce the youth of America to Paganism, with its deviant homosexual rituals and idol-worship. In addition to being overgeneralizing and underinformed, that sentence reveals the stereotypist in you. I think they should not only post the ten commandments on schools, but also on every website as well. And if you ever build a web site, Ms. Snope, it will be your prerogative to unabashedly post the Ten Commandments, in full view of your visitors. The Internet is a public medium, and it's protected by a concept known to government scholars as "free speech." I fought this kind of Godless nonsense in the 1980's, For crying out loud, de-capitalize "godless." You're not blasphening His name, and it's proper English. back when it was called Dungeons & Dragons, a "Game" that taught teenagers how to perform Satanic rituals and how to sacrifice babies to Lucifer before feasting on their limbs. And I bet you weren't very successful then, either. Once again your stance is crippled by stereotypes, reckless exaggeration, and appeals to scare tactics. Anyone who is even remotely familiar with D&D, something you are clearly not, knows that the game is simply a real-life roleplay. Roleplaying is a recogized therapy technique, a healthy form of play for children, and an art form (theatre) dating back hundreds of years before the birth of Christ. A very few zealots carried the game too far and indeed did commit some heinous acts, but the vast majority of casual Dungeons and Dragons players (myself included) are ordinary people from all walks of life. I, for example, am a devout Catholic, an honor student, and close friend and confidante to numerous peers. I also love computers, acting, and role-playing and video games. Do I sound like a threat to your children? The worst part about your website is that it panders to children. You talk of videogames yet, when you scrape away that thin verneer, all you find is blasphemous talk of nature Goddesses (a disgusting Wiccan concept) and Vampires and Pagan magical spells used by demons and sorcerers! Ma'am, these are all central concepts to dozens of these games! They are fantasy, escapism, a way to duck the pressures and demands of reality for a short time, and indulge the imagination! There is no "thin veneer" to this web site, only honest, what-you-see-is-what-you-get game coverage. Is this what those Godless liberal Atheists claim is defended by the 1st Amendment!? Yes, Ms. Snope, this is EXACTLY what the First Amendment to the United States Constitution was intended to defend. The right to hold unpopular views, and not fear oppression from those in the majority, is one of the dearest, most precious rights we hold as American citizens. Millions of soldiers have died to protect this liberty. They fought and sacrificed to preserve this freedom for EVERYONE, not just fundamentalist Christians such as yourself. Paganism and Wiccanism and Satanism? If that's what people choose to believe, then yes. Freedom of worship is something else we have in this country. Are you new to the U.S., by chance? Maybe you should thumb through a copy of the Constitution. It might prove highly enlightening for you. Is this what you're trying to teach our children? I am disgusted at the lengths you people will go to to turn our children away from the teachens of Jesus Christ. Nobody is trying to teach any children anything, other than how to win at video games. I don't believe any member of the RPGamer staff feels qualified as a religious counselor; strangely enough, they never try to give religious advice, either, only the video-game variety. What a strange coincidence. It is a good thing I caught my bunchkin Timothy looking at your website or else I wouldn't have known that you were trying to corrupt him. How fortunate for your son. Thanks to your diligence, little Timmy's soul has been forever saved from the scourge of RPGamer. I am going to write a sternly-worded letter to my State Representative Bob Barr, who actually cares about our youth, advocating that sites such as yours be censored and that libraries be filtered against such Godless liberal filth. Excellent idea. Maybe he can introduce legislation to have RPGamer's staff proclaimed guilty of heresy, and then get them stoned in the village square. You've already disregarded freedom of speech and religion; how hard could it be to get a bill of attainder, containing a provision for a cruel and unusual punishment, signed into law? This is what Al Gore made such a big stink about inventing? This Information Superhighway that is only good for turning our children against God and country? It's a good thing I didn't vote for him or that swine Klinton. I really hope your neck doesn't break at some point from being twisted so unnaturally far to the right. It is times like these where I am glad that I home-school my children and don't send them to public schools to learn socialism and atheism... ...where instead of learning heresies like tolerance, and how to expand one's horizons to thoughtfully weigh the merits of beliefs other than their own, and perhaps amend their own principles as a result of new information, they learn such wholesome values as close-mindedness and obstinacy. Your intended end may be noble, but it's become so grossly perverted by the means you use to achieve it that it becomes meaningless. You need to get out of the chapel once in a while, ma'am, and into the real world where the rest of us live. Original Editorial: Concerned Parent strikes out at RPGamer |
