by Kendra-K I have worked up a very nice three-by-three grid to explain the strengths and weaknesses of each of the three video game companies. Please remember, that this is in general, and only talking about the in-house gaming development and marketing.
What this means, is this: Sony has shown that it can make a system that lasts beyond pretty much all expectations, solely on it's games and hardware, without having to resort to peripherals and whatnot. But when was the last time youu saw a game by Sony itself that you cared about as more than a coaster? And when was the last time you saw an ad for the playstation itself, or one of Sony's own games outside of a sporting event? SEGA has shown that is can make simply breathtaking games, and that it has the marketing and hardware development skills of a particularily dumb lint ball. If SEGA can make such great games on a system that are beat out by an Interactive Barney, I can't help but wonder how they'd do on a technologically superior system. And thus we come to Nintendo. Nintendo is surviving mainly on sequels and ten-year-old-plus franchises, yet their games still tend to be above average. Nintendo also has a marketing department with the juggernaut-like momentum of a neutron star at .98c (98% the speed of light). Their systems are usually fairly good, but strictly middle-of-the-road stuff, despite how it's been billed as the most powerful system. Couple that with the fact that their games are often above average, and the fact that one is rarely more than three feet from a piece of Nintendo advertising, I'm actually kind of surprised that the N64 hasn't been doing as well as it could be. This said, the 'Nintendo vs. SEGA vs. Sony' debate is somewhat silly. Each company excels at their own thing: SEGA, at making games, Sony, at making systems, Nintendo, for making pretty much everyone who isn't in a vegetative state aware of their products. Since these abilities basicaclly cancel each other out, it comes down to third-party support, and your own preferences. Choose well, friends, and please remember that it is unlikely that any arguments will change people's own preferences. Kendra Kirai, the observant, (and tired of raging 'my system is better than your system' argument), Cat-girl. |
