Tis' I again, to spew forth more Square-apocalyptic banter! End Final Fantasy. You heard me. To some, this may be blasphemy, But I don't think the series should be allowed to continue past the Ninth installment. Why? Too much stuff is being repeated over and over and over again. True, each individual FF has its own outstanding plots and characters, but some elements are just a given. There are always swords named "Excalibur" and "Masamune". There's always a guy named Cid. There are always at least three levels each of Fire, Ice and Bolt. Or our friends Leviathan, Ifirit, Ramuh and Shiva. Or our good buddies, Wedge and Vicks. And let's not forget Chocobos, be they regular or the flying Black kind. Even Cloud is getting used all over the place. My goodness, besides the FFTactics appearance, he and the rest FF7 cast even appear in the fighting game, Ehrgiez! Granted, Squaresoft is taking the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" technique, but it will only be a matter of time before our beloved FF starts looking like a bad B-movie sequel fest. Just think, in FFXXI, the two warriors, Locke Strife and Squall Cole, searching for the purpose of life, will battle against the Evil Kefkaroth for the life of the planet. They will be assisted by their friend, Cid, and his Airship, of course, and they will all learn Ice 3 by the end of the game. See my point? I think Square should make a grand finale out of FFIX, somehow tying the plots of each game together. Now that would be cool. Not only would it be great to tie together all our favorite characters, but Square could end the series on top, instead of watching the series plummet like a bad sitcom. What would Square do after words? They have certainly proven that they can release quality games outside the FF series (or completely redefine, such as FFT). Or even start a new saga. But I have a feeling that no matter what happens, we'll never be without Chocobos! |
