by Bryan Berg Ah, the religious debate continues. Funny, isn't it? "Funny?" You say, "It's not funny! It's terrible!" I think it's hilarious. I think I just pissed off a good percent of the people reading this. They're Catholics, most of 'em. But I'm not. I'm a minority in the religious community - I'm Jewish. And as I said, I think this whole thing is funny. Why? Because the same people who get angry when Nintendo censored Final Fantasy IV for nudity, the ones who sit around praising free speech, are now enraged that Square is exercising their rights. Yep. Square has every right in the world to do whatever the hell they want. Who are you to stop them? Truth is, I've dealt with the same thing my whole life. I've met people who still believe the old stereotypes that Jews drink blood, and have horns. Truth be told, in some ways, FFT may be right. Many people twist religion to fit their needs. Televangelists con money out of faithful listeners. The way nearly every place of worship (not just the catholic church) wants you to give them loads of money-- membership fees, collections, asking for a percentage of your savings, etc. Perhaps Square is stating that even the most popular of religions has it's dark side. I can't state this for a fact; I have no clue why Square, as you put it, targets the Catholic church. However, the fact remains, you asked for true, uncensored, complete translations. Now you've go them. Your complaining only proves Ted Woolsey and the old Square USA were right in censoring their work; you obviously can't handle "The True Square." Like it or not, this kind of thing is prevalent in Japanese culture. They do not understand many things in out culture (read "Game Over" for information on how Nintendo Of America used to translate Japanese games in the early NES days), and vice versa. Regardless of whether or not they are right, they can say whatever they want. In fact, you insisted that they did. You got what you asked for. I've turned a deaf ear to this whole thing, because, in my opinion, you're whining because you aren't getting what you really want: "adult" material that won't offend you. Truth be told, it's just not possible. |
