Tools of the trade.

If you are reading this, it is presumably because you want to know more about me. Of course, I should like to oblige, but there is a problem. Writing about others is something which is easy. But here, where I am expected to write about myself, the result is never satisfying. If I make positive statements, I sound self-aggrandising and boastful. If I make negative statements I sound self-disparaging and emo. Instead of making any claims or evaluations, I will just state facts. Decide for yourself on the other matters.

I have some experience working in video game journalism, but I am not a journalism major. I am an historian. My focus is British medieval history--specifically the role of the church. Though I would enjoy doing Arthurian studies and covering the Matter of Britain, I must also be reasonable and consider that I should like gainful employment in the future. That was, after all, the reason I left Seminary and abandoned my advanced studies in Logic. So here I am, trucking away in History with minors in English and French. Additionally, I am reasonably fluent in Latin and I have some general knowledge of German and Anglo-Saxon. Fascinating.

My tabletop gaming knowledge is not diverse, but it is comprehensive, focused on D&D 2.5 and 3.5. Insofar as video games are concerned, I am obviously a fan of RPGs. Final Fantasy, as you might expect, features prominently. My other favourites are puzzle games--I am an avid fan--and platformers; I closely follow the Castlevania, Metroid, Mario, and Mega Man licenses. I collect imported game music soundtracks and have built up an extensive music collection. As noted above, music is a hobby--and indeed at one point it was my job. I am a former music minister for the Archdiocese of Detroit as an organist and pianist. In my youth I performed at various venues across the country, from Detroit, to Chicago, to Washington D.C. I have taught piano, vocal, jazz, and music theory at music schools across Michigan. Currently, however, I play only for my own enjoyment. Apart from that, I am a frequent attendee at the symphony, the opera, and the theatre. I never really enjoyed performing in public, anyway. I am much happier being an observer than a participant.

For those interested in my historical and historiographical ramblings, I suggest a subscription to The Historian. You may be fortunate enough to read one of my papers there. For those more interested in game-related offerings, please see the RPGamer Editorial section.

That is all. There is no more. Terminus est. Good day.
