Welcome to another episode of Q&A! I'm
busy working on reviewing Valhalla
Knights 3 and The Guided Fate
Paradox so hopefully I can have
reviews for those in the near future. I can
tell you one of them has been an absolute
chore, and one has been a brilliant
roguelike so far. Stay tuned!
On to your questions!
TwinBahamut was of course absolutely right
in that the language use is NOT that of old
English... I won't argue there. I am no
historian nor am I keeping myself updated on
the matter, plus I just like to spout
nonsense on the internet that is unfounded
and usually not very thoughtful either.
Oh trust me,
your thoughts are more founded
and astute than the vast
majority of what's out there on
That said, at least the trend in the
language use in the fantasy genre is
steering away from the protagonists being
bratty all American teens and try to at
least SOUND like they are not from this
world, however they try that. At least the
localizations are nowadays far more poetic
(probably a better term I should've used in
the first place) than they were back in the
I think that's the key here,
using language that sounds
different but not necessarily
true to one time period or
And with that poetic approach, one could
argue they are actually keeping closer to
the original Japanese script, which as I
said in a previous letter, I think
(disclaimer: again unfounded and
unthoughtful) is more poetic in its use of
language than Western people are. It's just
that they took the Western style of poetry
as a backdrop and not the Japanese.
Another disclaimer: All I just said is
completely unfounded and just something I
thought about very little.
I don't think
that's the case! Anyway, I think
we can all easily agree that
localization is far better than
it used to be. I know the other
issues of how to use language
are important, but not as
important as the overall
So Wheels, let's end with a question. What
are your thoughts on the game Illusion
of Gaia / Time? Wasn't it an awesome
That was one of
the SNES games I obsessed over
as a kid. I loved the mixture of
fantasy and historical
locations. History was likely my
favorite subject back then so I
played a ton of Illusion of
Gaia, soaking in all the
different locations. I wish they
would get that game on the
Virtual Console! It's been a
long time, I may have to go home
and fire it up.
What are your thoughts on the
I've been saying that baseball is 3 zippers
per uniform away from being a jrpg.
I know, right?
I can't believe we haven't had a
plethora of JRPG Baseball games.
The story mode in Konami's MLB
Power Pros was close, but
not quite a full JRPG. We've got
Soccer JRPGs, so we are the
Baseball JRPGs? The sport is
lengthier than most, full of
pauses in the action, and has
all kinds of storylines and
historical comparisons. It also
has lots of numbers! Come on
Japanese developers, make this
After the shocking attempt at defending the
first game's theme song, I feel I have
little choice than to demand you explain why
the theme songs from the second and third
Inazuma games are much better than,
let's say, Tales
Why would you do
this to poor Wheels? These
intros are insanely corny and I
can't even begin to imagine how
I can say they're better than
the wonderful opening to Tales
of Vesperia. The levels of
cheesy anime in these are intros
are completely off the charts.
They need to put warnings on
them because they are a
potential danger to your health.
I mean the intro for the third Inazuma
has a bit of Jazziness to it,
but not enough to make it good.
I think you have finally found
an impossible task that is true
to its name!
SO I LOOK AT THE INTERNET AND I SEE ALL
THESE PEOPLE TALKING ABOUT "BRAVELY
DEFAULT FAIRY THING'S BIG DAY" OR
SOMETHING. AND I'M LOOKING AT IT AND I'M
LIKE, OKAY IT'S SOME DUMB FINAL FANTASY
WHATEVER BUT THESE DUDES IS WAY, WAY PUMPED.
LIKE MORE THAN USUAL. SO MY QUESTION TO YOU
IS DOES NOBODY AT SQUARE KNOW A PERSON THAT
SPEAKS ENGLISH? I MEAN I GET THAT
BILINGUAL PEOPLE AREN'T SUPER COMMON BUT
COME ON "BRAVELY DEFAULT" ARE YOU
THERE'S NOTHING INHERENTLY COURAGEOUS ABOUT
FAILING TO PAY YOUR BILLS ON TIME.
Yeah, I've been against keeping
that game's original Japanese
name from the start. It looks
and sounds awful in English, and
doesn't give people a sense that
it has some connection to Four
Heroes of Light. I'm not
saying they absolutely needed to
pull a Final Fantasy Legend
and put the big brand on it or
anything, but it needed a name
other than this. I think it'll
sell OK anyway given the appeal
to hardcore games, but I'd hate
to be the ones trying to market
that game. I think I should hold
a little Q&A contest to see
what better names readers can
come up with!
ALSO VIDEO GAMES ARE DUMB AND JAYARRPEGEES
ARE THE DUMBEST.
It's hard to argue that when
they're using names like Bravely
See you all next week!
