ASK Wheels
Breath of iOS
  August 2nd, 2013

08/02- 7:00PM EST

Ask Wheels returns! I hope you enjoyed Ask Phil while I was away.  I know Phil put a lot of work into answering your many fantastic questions. Now then let's get back to... Breath of Fire VI announced as a browser/mobile game? Oh dear. Well, your friend Wheels is here to field your angry rants! I'm expecting some for next week.

Anyway, on to your letters/tweets!

The Letters
.hack//Stealth

Welcome back, the Q&A was not the same without you.

1) Do you think someone should pick up Trails in the Sky 1-3 on the PS3? Someone other than Xseed who has the team capacity to handle it?

Wheels

Thank you! It's good to be back, though I did enjoy the break. Phil did a great job in my absence.

I'm not sure that would help, I think it depends on whether or not Falcom would have to be involved with the actual programming part. I remember reading about how that was a much bigger job than they expected when inserting the translation of the first PSP game. With the first game being already translated, I think XSEED should find a way to get that translation into the other versions of the first entry and get that out to more people, and then try and do the same once the translation for the second chapter is complete (assuming that's still being worked on to the side). I'm not sure any other publisher is going to spend more money to get a translation done faster of some of the Trails games given the first one didn't exactly sell like gangbusters. Obviously that's partially just because it was on PSP, so as I've said before I really think getting that game out here on some other platform will help get the other entries localized assuming it sells like we all think it could. There's probably lots of complexities to doing that which we aren't aware, so right now the only thing we can do is be patient and hope. XSEED just revealed that Ys games have done very well on Steam, so no doubt their relationship with Falcom is still good and they've said they're looking to get more titles on there. I think that the relationship between Falcom and XSEED probably means another party being involved is unlikely. Then again I recall Carpe Fulgur being interested in the Trails games on PC so perhaps they could do some kind of collaboration. Who knows at this point! I'm really hoping we hear some Trails news in the near future.

2) What games are you playing right now and what rpgs are you looking forward to as we approach the holidays?

Wheels

Right now I've just finished up ArcaniA (see my review here), I'm doing some post game leveling in .hack G.U. Volume 1 before I start Volume 2, playing lots of Shin Megami Tensei IV, Disgaea 1 on PSP, Tactics Ogre, and of course some Panzer Dragoon Saga. I'll also probably be jumping into more SaGa 3 DS and Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey in the near future. Lots of good RPGs (except ArcaniA)! As far as upcoming games, I'm looking forward to giving Tales of Xillia a shot, but mostly I'm looking towards Wii U titles this holiday. Primarily that would mean the HD version of Wind Waker, and the new Donkey Kong Country. I'll also be looking forward to the Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Collection assuming it ever gets an actual release date.

3) What are your thoughts on the .hack games and are you planning on playing and or reviewing?    :P

@Stealth____

Wheels

Well I had a lot of trouble getting into Infection back in the day, and that made me ignore the series for the longest time. I loved the concept of using an MMO as a setting though, so eventually @fanboymaster was able to convince me to give the GU series a try and consider I just beat the first entry you can probably guess that I enjoyed it quite a bit. Sadly, I couldn't get into the prequel anime to this series due to the differing voice cast, but I'll try and watch the whole thing. Anyway, GU does a great job both in being a fun action RPG on its own, but also really capturing MMO culture (and this came out seven years ago). It is exactly what I had hoped the original series would be, and the cell-shaded art style has aged quite gracefully. Being a part one, the story leaves a lot unanswered, but served as a great way to establish the characters and setting. I'm really looking forward to seeing what the second two parts do, and I plan on retroviewing each entry.

I've picked up the old series as well to give it another shot, and I even did the same for the original .hack Sign anime series which I watched and loved. I'm sure I'll still have some of the issues I originally had with the series, but I have the feeling I won't dislike the gameplay as much as I did back then. I think when I originally tried Infection I was expecting it to be more like an MMO, and have a better defined fantasy world, so I was expecting things from it that I shouldn't have. Anyway thanks for the questions, and be sure to keep an eye out for more from me on the .hack series.

Does Beat Even Play RPGs?

@AskWheels DEAR WHEELS WHY DID YOUR MOM STOP CALLING ME?

Wheels

Because you said RPGs are bad and you wouldn't admit that Resonance of Fate is an amazing achievement in game design.

@AskWheels OKAY I HAVE A QUESTION HERE GOES.

@AskWheels FORGET IT I DON'T NEED YOUR TOES ANYMORE.  I FOUND A FEW LYING AROUND.

‏@BEAT_TWITTAR

Wheels

I'm not sure I want to know how you found a few lying around. Beat you sound distressed, you should play some RPGs. I think a little Mugen Souls will do you good. You can totally trust me on this.

Tales of Tales of Xillia

Tales of Xillia saw a huge spike over most other Tales of g8mes in terms of s8les upon release in japan, something its sequel didn't even come close to replic8ting and which, naturally its predecessors weren't super gr8 at either. Any guesses or ideas as to what caused the sudden and drastic 8oost?

@fanboymaster

Wheels

There's probably multiple possible reasons. Xillia probably naturally got a boost being the first Tales game designed from the start for the PS3. Perhaps it couldn't quite live up to that hype? There's also the close proximity to the release of the original. A year after Xillia they release a sequel? This isn't Madden, unless a story is unresolved you have to give a bit of breathing room between entries. It could also be that a large chunk of games just weren't happy with the original. That said, it's not like the sequel did bad so I think one of the earlier reasons is the most likely one. After next week I think I'll have a better idea after spending some time with the game. Great question!

True Logic?

@AskWheels Oh hey questions!? You should talk about Persona 3 more. So pretend I asked you a question about it!

Wheels

I'm glad you asked why Persona 3 is so awesome! I know from twitter that you are playing the PSP version, and personally I enjoy it a lot more than the original  release. The PS2 version was very well balanced around all allies being controlled by AI, and while I had no problem with that I think the game is more fun getting to control them yourself. More importantly are the changes to exploring and interacting around town which speed the game up considerably. A great mix of character interaction and dungeon crawling, Persona 3 and its sequel are unique and insanely fun.

@AskWheels Why don't your readers bathe regularly?

Wheels

You're a reader, you tell me?

@AskWheels Why do you love a terrible series like Ys?

Wheels

Obviously because it's not terrible! You should play some good Ys. Oath in Felghana is a good starting point. Play that and then come back to me and we'll see where your opinion is.

@AskWheels Are there any good RPGs about being a pirate? Skies of Arcadia does not count!

Wheels

If that doesn't count then sadly the answer is pretty much no. There was some Pirates of the Caribbean game from Bethesda, but I think it was just a re-branded Sea Dogs sequel, but I can't vouch for its quality. It certainly is an underrepresented style of RPG.

@AskWheels Are there any RPGs that center around kaiju or daikaiju?

Wheels

I believe there are, I think the King of Content may have commented on some but I don't know of any off hand. There probably are!

@AskWheels When will you finally put me on ignore?

Wheels

Never man, never!

@AskWheels Oh man, a kaiju RPG would be great! How come we don't have any?!

Wheels

I think it'd be pretty interesting too! Perhaps we'll see one here some day. Would be a nice change of pace. Maybe Pacific Rim can help make one happen?

@AskWheels Oh hey! Another question: who the hell is this Kaneko guy and why are people all upset about him leaving?

@falselogic

Wheels

He's an artist who's been involved with Shin Megami Tensei series for ages. I guess he didn't do all the designs for Shin Megami Tensei IV and people were upset about that or something? I honestly couldn't say because I love the art in the game, and haven't really run into anything bad. I think you'd have to ask some long time Shin Megami Tensei fans.
IN CLOSING

See you all next week!
