Summer is starting to encroach. Stupid summer. It makes it so hard avoid that big firey ball that appears in the sky when I stay up too late. My cats sure like it though.

No question, but it's an amusing annecdote!

Hey Google,

Long time, no speak. IÕd doubt you remember me from years back, but personally, I think itÕs irrelevant. Anyway, funny you bring up Wild ARMs again. WA3 is actually the reason I ended up throwing my entire PS2 in the trash.

Well, thatÕs a lie. WasnÕt the game itself, really.

I was feeling up for a bit of nostalgia. I had gotten on an adventure game kick on my PC, going back through and playing stuff like Inherit the Earth, Space Quest IV, The Fate of Atlantis, and Sam and Max: Hit the Road. IÕd have played KingÕs Quest IV and Day of the Tentacle if I could have found them. Anyway, my nostalgia transferred itself over to my consoles, and OlÕ Reliable, the N64, was hit first and hit hard. Then came FF7, and that was spent in three dayÕs time. FF8 was spent. Chrono Trigger came next. DW7 was next (and dear God, the thing should not ALLOW people to attempt more than one playthrough).

But then I was in the mood for a western, and the only one I had was WA3. Popped it in, took hold of my controller, and waited. I didnÕt think much of it at the time. The damned thing had been slow lately anyway. I went to the kitchen to make a sandwich and grab a drink, into the garage for a cigarette, and when I came back, the console was smoking, too. Great!

I couldnÕt open the tray, so I wound up unplugging the console, and dissecting it later in what I now describe as a Consopsy. >From what I discovered, I can only assume that the disc had stopped spinning, so the laser was focused on one spot for a good long time. My Wild ARMs 3 disc had been destroyed, and it had begun the ever-convenient melting process. Cream of Filgaia had seeped down, and the hot plastic burned through the ribbons connected to the laser. This was a special day, my old friend.

I figured that it would cost about as much, if not more, than a new (to me) console, should I have gotten it repaired. So I tossed it, along with all of my good and happy memories. Farewell, Compy 386! You were a good computer! Until Bubs shotgunned you!

I guess I could have come back to the column with a happy, uplifting story, but we expect bad news at reunions. Just look at North Crater.

Wow. I've seen plenty of PS2s fail to read discs, or bite them in half, but actually melting them, that's pretty impressive.

 
Where gamers dwell...

Hello Googleshng,

We all know lots of gamers exisit and that games are becoming just as if not more mainstream then movies, but whats strange is that I have rarely meet a gamer that wasent online in my general surrondings. I know people play them in my city I see them at the store, but all the people I meet never play them. Is the reason why games are so popular is because the hardcore passionate gamers play alot or am I just looking and living in the wrong part of AMERICA, witch happens to be the west coast area.

Thanks, although the question is probley one for a comment as opposed to a question.

It isn't really a question of living in the wrong area. The problem is that, quite frankly, people who play videogames don't get out much on average. Comes with the territory. That wasn't always the case of course. Back in the heyday of the arcade, videogamers were an extremely social lot. It's just hard to meet people when their primary hangout is in front of a TV. Conventions of any sort work well too though.

Haha, yes, Jonny the Homicidal Maniac! It brought me great joy to know that the folks at RPGamer love Jhonen Vasquez' work like I do. Mmm, I'm getting the urge to watch my Invader Zim collection all over again. Especially the Most Horrible Christmas Ever episode, or A Room With a Moose!

question: do you like Zim too, or just Nny?

On the RPG side of things, I've been playing through Guild Wars, and it's pretty sweet. Graphically superb, nice story (especially considering it's an mmorpg), and the skill system trumps all I've seen. I recommend you check it out (man, I sound like a promoter or something). It's fun.

story time: My friend was telling me that one time he was playing Star Ocean 2 while on Vicaden or some such pain reliever (due to a very unfortunate accident) and began to think he really was the main character.

somewhat game-related question: Have you ever had such an identity crises?

If I didn't like Zim, I doubt I'd quote it as much as I do. Anyway, I've never been quite that out of sorts when it comes to games, no. My life is surreal enough as is really.

As for Guild Wars, I don't have the cash to pick it up myself, but I really like what I've heard. It comes off more like online-only Diablo 3 than a MMORPG though in my book. Which, mind you, is a very good thing.

 
Travelling!

Has there ever been, in your opinion, an RPG that portrayed a realistic sense of travel?

I could name quite a few, depending on what exactly it is you mean by that. If we're talking about having a world where heading from one general region of the game to another really gives the sense of being somewhere new and encountering new cultures for example, Skies of Arcadia scores big points (even though the world is pretty transparently based on the real world circa 1850). Grandia oddly enough doesn't, despite that being the whole theme of the game.

On the other hand, if you want a game where it really seems to take forever to get from point A to point B, then Grandia stands out just fine, as does every MMORPG I've ever seen.

Finally, if you want a game where new modes of transportation are a big deal, I'd recommend practically every 8 and 16 bit RPG ever made, plus the Wild ARMs series. Bonus points to FF4, and Phantasy Stars 1 and 4. Hovercrafts and spaceships are spiffy.

 
Cube Skies Love

Hey, I've played both the original SoA and the Gamecube port and I have to say that overall the 'Cube version is more enjoyable. Reducing encounter rates was much needed, I understand that encounters are based on the ship's movement but they were still too high when you consider the need to fly in circles around some areas in order to make some discoveries. And including all of the previously downloadable content right off the bat makes Legends the version I'm much more likely to play again. Plus as far as I'm concerned any new content in the SoA universe is welcome to me, sure it's not a sequel but considering recent trends maybe that's a good thing.

I'm still of the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" mindset here, but it's nice to see someone who digs the changes.
