   Snow Covered Lands

Googleshng - February 17 '03- 2:00 Eastern Standard Time

In Magic, there are certain advantages to lands being snow covered. In real life though, having snow so deep you can't tell if there's a car parked in the driveway or not, there isn't much you can get done at all. At least the power hasn't gone out.

Exploration

Why for the love of God, why can we not get a decent RPG for the PS2? By decent I mean great. Gone are the days of RPG's with millions of side quests, a great plot, and tons of exploration via airships or whatever other means of transportation you could find. FF-X is probably the best we've gotten on the PS2 SO FAR and it's very linear with little extra to do. Even the airship doesn't let you explore the world map. I've had to bust out my old PSX games to get my fill of exploration. When are we going to get a game like (insert any FF game which came out on the PSX here) with exploration and sidequests for a next generation system? Bah! I'm going to go play Quest For Glory V!

The Disgruntled Lich King

Googleshng:
Wild ARMs 3 has that traditional sort of world exploration, but aside from that, yeah, there's a serious lack of games without rigid linearity on the PS2.

I really don't recall much about this game aside from how great Stampede is.

I wanted to clarify a quickie that Andrew answered yesterday (Sunday, February 16th), concerning Dragon Warrior VII. The reader asked why Estard was the only island not sealed away, and Andrew responded by saying that it was, de facto, sealed away, since every other island was anyway. ThatŐs not true:

(Spoiler Alert)

According to the game, the Demonlord was unable to seal Estard because God used the last of his powers to protect it. Theoretically, it was because the hero would be born there, and thus it was vitally important that the island be saved. (That, and the Ancient Fane was there too.) Estard was the only island that didnŐt get sealed, which is why it can unseal all of the other islands. (It would follow that, were it sealed, it would be unable to do so, since it was subject to the same prison that the other islands were.) This is confirmed when the Demon Lord actually does seal Estard, during the 2nd disc. Hope this clears everything up. Sorry for writing so much, and so frequently.

Googleshng:
It's still somewhat academic though to have only one island not sealed in another dimension. You still have a one island per dimension ratio going.

Woe unto ye...

dear goole,
I have been searching for a copy of Hoshigami for PSX. It's been a long time since I"ve played a good Strategy Rpg. I live in Vancouver BC and have been unable to locate a copy. I was hoping you could help

Thanks
Kenji

Googleshng:
Odds are you can find a copy of Hoshigami pretty cheap on eBay, but I really wouldn't recommend it. Hoshigami is too frustrating to really be worth playing. For example, if a character dies, they stay dead. Characters can easily be killed in one hit. This is not a good combination. Some other TRPGs you may have missed: The GBA Tactics Ogre game, Saiyuki: Journey West, Vandal Hearts, Koudelka, Vanguard Bandits.

Both sides

Greetings,

I've been passively reading the column this weekend and am a little surprised by the .hack bashing. It may be too late to tell Andrew about the positive aspects of .hack//infection, but I figured I should at least speak out on it's behalf.

To start with the graphics are rather poorly done. However, just about everything else is well done. The battle system is far more complex than some might have you believe. If you find yourself simply smashing the X button, you're doing something wrong. Once you have other players in your party you have complete control over what kind of actions they're going to take, which is essential to beating higher level enemies. Magic is more than useful, it's required, and since mp regenerates you can cast without too much fear of being stranded half way through a dungeon without magic or items.

Then there's the whole interaction with the other "people" playing the World. Most of them have very distinct personalities with lots of items to trade. Trading also happens to be one of the better features of the game, as it allows you to find better equipment more rapidly than waiting for an enemy to drop some. Also with weapons and armor providing you with skills ala FF9, it adds a lot of strategy to how you equip yourself for an area. Since I've already gone off on a tangent I'll simply say that the hacking elements are neat twists on rpg staples (stealing, mostly). And the sheer volume of things to collect and find are more than enough to keep some people playing, if that's the kind of thing you enjoy.

Anyway, the short of it is that it's a nifty dungeon crawler with plenty of things to find and reasons to keep exploring, not to mention that the plot alone is worth the price of admission (if you plan on watching the series and ova).

Feel free to cut this short, as it is rather lengthy, just felt the need to stick up for this particular game since it has won me over.

You know, the more I hear about this game, the less I want to play it.

Ah'ma Deus! Numba one!

Hey there, g,

I'm sure I saw a news update that said RPGamer has decided to cover Deus Ex, but now I can't seem to find it. What's the deal?

Also, which game did you think was 2002's best (RPG or not)? I like SMS, but I didn't think it was as good as M64. I don't know; it just didn't *feel* as fun.

-jaraph

Googleshng:
I think it was a media update actually, and I'm honestly not sure. Either someone pulled the coverage, or someone just forgot to link to it properly. I can't seem to get any confirmation on which though.

As far as the best game of last year goes, that's a pretty tough call. Particularly seeing how I'm a bit fuzzy on some dates. I think Metroid Prime was the most pleasant surprise of the year though. I'm still amazed that they actually made it work in 3D.

Quickies

What were they thinking?! A five hour RPG?!

The REALLY Disgruntled Lich King

P.S. FF-H is nifty

When making such exclamations, you really need to elaborate a bit. Mention the game's name for example. The subject line says Dragon Quarter, so I'll assume BoF5.

Why no staff review of .hack? I'm interested in seeing what the experts think.

Well, it only came out a week ago, we have a policy against reviewing games we haven't completely finished, and while we did have an advance copy of the game, it didn't allow saving. We'll have a review up in the near future though.

The Last Laugh:

Someone sent me a boxed set of Trigun DVDs over the weekend, and I also managed to start playing an Ogre Battle game and NOT totally #@$% myself over alignment wise. So it was a much better weekend for me than for the two five year olds whose parents took them to see Final Destination 2 last night. You have to be pretty darn sick in the head when you're taking impressionable toddlers to a movie where practically every character's brain is splattered all over eventually.

Is it just me, or does Monev look like Bigshot from The Tick?
