Well it has been entirely too long since you've had your dose of Ethos. January was absolutely crazy for me, and you can imagine that it wasn't because of RPGamer since I haven't contributed to the site since the video QnA. But don't think you got off that easy! I have two reviews coming up, this QnA, and a final video feature to post from my time in Michigan.
But more about that later on.
More important is Oliver's incredibly pathetic job as Head of Interaction. Have you noticed that the more power he has, the less he does for you and me? It's a terrible sign. He's the sort of dictator that would let his people die in front of him. And no, that's not too dramatic. I may secretly be great friends with The Montok and call him often, but I will continue to relentlessly hack at his ego and reputation on this public forum. The point is that he and I are now officially taking turns to host this column weekly.
What have I been playing? Shut up! I play games still! I'm actually trying desperately to not become Sabin, the RPGCast host, and finish a game or two. First on the list is Tales of Vesperia. It is too long. I will not review it, but if I did, I expect I would give it a 3.5.
Anyway, onto the letters. I'm trying a new thing today. I'm going to answer a regular letter and then hand it over to a new "section" called Rapid Fire: The IRCorner. This will be a collection of (mostly) questions collected from the #rpgamer and the staff channels. They will be short and my answers will likely be almost as short. If you're not familiar with IRC but would like to be a part of the section, just head over to RPGamer's chat applet. If that confuses you as well, we have a handy FAQ for your convenience. I hope it takes off, and if it does, I'll include a smaller version of it each time I host this column. Let me know if you like the idea.

In Which JuMeSyn's Second Letter Sees the Light of Day
|
Master Ethos, this letter is again to be held until needed.
Your most reviled console of all time is?
|
Ethan
JuMeSyn! Since you wrote this letter, there has been a new year, and you are now staff! But I didn't forget about this letter, I was just waiting for the opportunity.
And I don't have a reviled console, I only buy ones I like.

Indeed I did mean musical score - so what are your picks for greatest and worst music from RPGs?
|
Ethan
Well this is a tough one. My pick would have to be Nobuo's pick as well: Final Fantasy IX. I have not played anything more on my piano than the soundtrack for this game. It is the most consistent and powerful score for any media I have experienced.
Worst is a different story. I don't particularly remember hating the music from RPGs I've played, but rather being indifferent. And the only music I can think of that rubbed me the wrong way was the stuff from The World Ends With You, but that score was so well suited to the game that I can't even knock it. It just didn't work well with my personal tastes. So that's the best answer I can give. I'll let you know if I've forgotten something. (I'm not counting Dokapon Kingdom as a RPG)

What experience with Sega games or consoles do you have?
|
Ethan
Minimal, for better or for worse. My first console was the N64, and by the time I started looking beyond Nintendo, the Dreamcast was dying. I did, however, have a chance to play Skies of Arcadia on SEGA's doomed console and loved it. I also enjoyed a few Sonic games on my friend's Game Gear. I think I rented a Genesis a few times as well as a kid, but I barely remember. So the short answer: limited.

Your pick for the worst translation is?
What title(s) that never saw official English release would you wish to receive such?
|
Ethan
It used to be Kingdom Hearts Re: Chain of Memories, but that doesn't apply anymore. Soma Bringer looks pretty cool. We should get that.
|
Mutable my writing can be.

In which "Rapid Fire: The IRCorner" is Introduced
|
[14:08] @Mac|Hereish> Have you ever found an RPG character attractive?
|
Ethan
Absolutely. Too many to count. Practically every game I play has a smokin' hot chick that brings me to inappropriate thoughts.
|
[14:09] @noodle> why are RPG fans so anti-kirby
|
Ethan
Are they? I like Kirby. In fact, Kirby's Dream Land for the original Game Boy was the game that got me into gaming. I just think that RPGamer will not cover Kirby games until you can level up and equip Super Suck as an accessory.
|
[14:22] Kiro> Also, fans of the iPhone as a gaming platform.
[14:22] Kiro> Too much fluoride or just alot of liquor?
|
Ethan
Can't say I'm sure what you mean by that second line, but the whole iPhone discussion is interesting. It's a bit of a cop-out, but I think it's still too early to say. There has been some decent stuff so far, but who knows if the ideas will fall away, or if the organization will get better, or if it will get too saturated? I don't really care to use my iPod Touch for a gaming platform, but I'm not knocking it yet. Let's keep our eyes peeled.

[14:28] @sabin> followup question
[14:28] @sabin> WHy do you suck so much?
|
Ethan
What? Who? Shut up! Where'd that come from? Ouch, Sabs!
|
[15:43] @Ethos> Where's the Lusipurr Documentary?
|
Ethan
Drat, I thought I could make it out clean without having to answer this. It's still coming. Like I said, January was nuts, but I have a very light week coming up next week, so if it is not up by the end of that week, I give you all permission to eat me alive.
|
|
What?
Done already? Well I guess a short update is better than no update. *cough cough MONTOK cough*
So tell me what you think of the IRCorner, and write if you're still confused about how the chat works. Montok claims he'll be here next week, but I'll be here the week after! Links to the general mailbox and my and Oliver's specific e-mail addresses are at the top of the column. Go to!
